Here’s a brief glossary of Karate¬†terminology in Japanese – so no one has any excuses not to know them!

 

Punch (Zuki)

Karate

  • Age-zuki: Rising punch
  • Choku-zuki: Straight punch
  • Gyaku-zuki: Reverse punch
  • Awase-zuki: U-punch
  • Oi-zuki: Lunge punch
  • Teisho-zuki: Palm-heel punch
Strikes (Uchi)
  • Empi-uchi: Elbow strike
  • Haito-uchi: Ridge-hand strike
  • Nukite: Spear hand
  • Kentsui-uchi: Hammer fist strike
  • Shuto-uchi: Knife hand strike
  • Teisho-uchi: Palm hand strike
  • Uraken-uchi: Back fist strike
Stance (Dachi)
  • Zenkutsu-dachi: Front stance
  • Kokutsu-dachi: Back stance
  • Kiba-dachi: Horse stance
  • Neko-ashi-dachi: Cat stance
Kick (Geri)

Karate

  • Mae-geri: Front kick
  • Mae-geri-kakomi: Front thrust kick
  • Yoko-geri-kaegi: Side snap kick
  • Yoko-geri-kekomi: Side thrust kick
  • Fumikomi: Stamping kick
  • Mawashi-geri: Round kick
  • Ushiro-geri: Back kick
Block (Uke)
  • Gedan-barai: Down block
  • Age-uke: Upper raising block
  • Shuto-uke: Knife-hand block
  • Uchi-uke: Inside block
  • Soto-uke: Outside block
  • Juji-uke: X-block
